‘Forbes’ Names Roger Federer As the Highest-Paid Athlete of 2020

Roger Federer is officially the highest-paid athlete of 2020, accumulating $106 million USD of pre-tax earnings in total.

According to Forbes, Federer is the first-ever tennis player to move up to No. 1 in the list’s 30-year history. The Swiss tennis star reportedly has the best endorsement portfolio in the world of sports, earning $100 million USD off the court from his deals with UNIQLO, Credit Suisse, Mercedes-Benz and 10 other brands. He jumped to the top spot after placing fifth on the 2019 list.

Federer effectively overtook last year’s top 2 leaders Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, bumping them down a spot each to Nos. 2 and 3. The Portuguese soccer star earned a total of $105 million USD while the FC Barcelona captain gained $104 million USD. Ronaldo earned $60 million USD in winnings and $45 million USD from his endorsement deals with Nike, Altice, Herbalife and his own brand CR7. Brazilian legend Ronaldo names top-5 current players: Messi top, Cristiano Ronaldo excluded

Former Brazilian international Ronaldo has provided his take on the current top-5 players on the planet, with Lionel Messi inevitably included, but namesake Cristiano Ronaldo somewhat controversially omitted.

For the last decade+, fans across the globe have argued at length as to which of football’s two most iconic names can consider himself the world’s best.

Ronaldo and Messi have of course defined a generation, with the almost-inconceivable consistency with which the pair have found the net over the course of their respective careers unlikely to ever be matched again.

Silverware, both individual and at club level, have also followed, with a staggering 11 Ballon d’Ors (advantage Messi) and 9 Champions League crowns (advantage Ronaldo) shared between the Argentine and Portuguese superstars.

Most would argue that it is Messi who is not only the superior talent, but quite possibly the most gifted footballer to ever grace the pitch.

Those in favour of Ronaldo, on the other hand, point to the former Real Madrid man’s relentless desire to improve, as well as his almost freak-like athleticism.
